As self-isolation continues to unfold in cities and towns across the world, we’re all experiencing the highs and lows of our new normal. Sometimes it feels like a gift, and sometimes it feels like a curse.
The next time you’re a little blue about it all, these five strategies are guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.
1. Create a virtual book club. I’m pairing this with an Instagram post. Please chime in with your top picks! Here’s mine: for an inspiring and thought-provoking read, The Alchemist by Paolo Coehlo. For feel-good escapism, City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert (according to the author, it goes down like “a gin fizz” :)
2. Reach out to people who could use a helping hand. It’s tough to know how to help when that hand has to be virtual, but we can all pick up the phone, send along an inspiring story, or even write an old fashioned letter. Seniors who are on their own are especially isolated; a simple chat could make all the difference in their day.
3. Doodle on. Remember how often you did this as a kid? Doodling is all about the journey, not the destination. Who cares about the result (though the result may surprise you). It can be accomplished while you’re watching TV, making phone calls, or simply daydreaming. Doodling allows your mind to wander and get creative.
4. Create a vision board. What goals do you want to embrace in the months and years ahead? A visual version of whatever inspires you, use old photos, cutouts from magazines, anything that tickles your fancy. Visualize what you want to bring to fruition.
5. Embrace the pause. Before we know it, life will be busy again. Hug your kids (furry ones too!), take a deep breath, and be thankful. Even in the worst moments, tiny blessings abound.
